"If the killers really are as smart as they seem, they will use Randy and Evi's love for each other against them. It's the kind of love that can be made to look like whatever it is you want to see."

Article: Spaulding Gray's Son
A new documentary by Steven Soderbergh (And Everything is Going Fine) about the life of Spaulding Gray is coming out on December 10. The final song in the movie was composed by his now 18 year old son Forrest.
Spaulding was one of my favorite artists. I was lucky enough to see him perform his monologue Monster in a Box live at UCLA. I believe it was his last monologue. I remember at the time, he seemed to be doing so well. He was, for Spaulding, unusually optimistic and upbeat. This was before the accident in 2001 that gave him a brain injury, left him in such pain and plunged him into such a deep and chronic depression. On January 10, 2004 he went missing. His body was found in the East River months later. His death was determined most likely to have been suicide.

Article: Your Worst Fears About Corporate Suppression of Technical Innovation Are Well-Justified
Gizmodo has an interesting article on how Bell Labs (AT&T) made the decision to suppress the invention of magnetic recording tape...in 1934. For all you conspiracy theorists who are convinced that corporate interests are responsible for things like marijuana being illegal or electric cars being shelved, just know that you're probably right.

Video: Shoppers Gone Wild - Happy Black Friday
I stayed as far away from shopping malls today as I could. What is this all about? I've heard interviews with people who wait in these lines - most of them don't even have something specific they're interested in buying. I guess they just want the rush of feeling like they got a "great deal."

Blog: Rejection Therapy - Tomorrow
"“When your time is up, your time is up” he said, shrugging his shoulders.
Judging by the many dead people Rich has encountered on the job, death comes unexpectedly. Death doesn’t care if you look dignified or not. It won’t wait until every thing on your bucket list is crossed off. It doesn’t care if you’re young or old, ready or not."

Video: Cars 2 Movie Trailer - Is Cars 2 Going to Suck?
"Cars" is still my boys' favorite Pixar movie. What's not to like? But man, this sequel looks like it's going to suck. I hope I'm wrong, but I work with a guy who actually worked on the movie, and he told me, based on seeing it in its unfinished state, it was going to be as bad as it looks. He described it as a "Saturday morning cartoon." This seems really unlike Pixar. I think I'm going to blame Disney if this is the case.
Article: Dating Site CanDoBetter - Strangers Rate Your Date
Kind of a twist on "Hot or Not" I guess.
"CanDoBetter is (allegedly) a "social networking site that fuses together traditional dating and a 'New Age' experience." And it does! As long as "New Age experience" means acting like a total freak and posting photos of your "possible dating partner" for complete strangers to judge. Their motto: "Let the World Decide!" "

CIA surfed my blog?!
One of the nicest perks of Blogger.com (besides the fact that their service is totally free) is that they give you stats on the number and origin of the people who log onto your site. Yesterday I noticed a hit from the following url: http://www.cia.gov/studies/open_source_inteligence/article327.html. Don't bother trying to log into it - its an encrypted CIA site. So my question is - is this just somebody at the CIA doing some personal web surfing, or did I actually post a link of interest to the CIA, and, if so, which link could it be? People, I am going down the rabbit hole!

Why Do People Like Zombie Movies?
With the advent of the new AMC show "The Walking Dead", I've been thinking a lot about zombies. Okay, that's a lie - I've always thought about zombies and/or post-apocalyptic scenarios. I'm trying to figure out why this genre is so appealing. I just caught the end of Zombieland, and I think I have a possible answer. By the way, if you haven't seen Zombieland, stop reading now, and go and rent/buy/download it - its a perfect mixture of comedy and zombies (right alongside Shaun of the Dead.)
So...zombies. Why are they so appealing? At the end of Zombieland, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) realizes that the small group that he is a part of (Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) , Wichita (Emma Stone...sigh) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin)) are the closest thing he's ever had to a real family. I think that is exactly what this genre speaks to. Often it feels like the rest of the world is, at best totally indifferent to us, and at worst, completely hostile to us, ready to literally eat us alive. And what stands between us and them? Our small group of family and friends. They are the only things that protect us from the big, bad world. I think this is what resonates the most with people. Add to this the fear that someone in our own group may turn out to betray us, i.e., become a zombie, and you can really understand its appeal.

Video: '68 Canadians
From a Canadian variety show in 1968 called Juliette and The Good Company. It's hard to beat 60's era variety shows for wholesomeness, but adding the fact that it's Canadian takes it to a whole other level.

Waking Up Pissed
I woke up this morning in a pretty foul mood. Actually, I was pissed off, thanks to a dream I was having. I was in a bar, and I was trying to order a drink. There were two bartenders, each standing idly by, having a casual conversation with each other. I waited a few minutes for them to finish and take my order, but they just continued on like I wasn't there. Finally, I said, "hey guys, I don't mean to interrupt your chit-chat, but can I order a drink?" They gave me a look that basically told me to go f*ck myself, and I stormed out of the place, vowing to never return. Then I woke up. What a great way to start a Friday.

Article: Out of 20 Countries, U.S. Women Rank Nearly Dead Last for Flirting
Article here.
"What the study measured, in particular, was how many women initiate contact with men. The site analyzed 90 million contacts between women and men in the different countries below to arrive at the final rankings."
""This study focused on who makes the first move," Lloyd Price, Badoo's Director of Marketing told Lemondrop. "What it shows is simply that American women are less likely than those in most other countries -- and much less likely than Spanish and most Latin women -- to be the one initiating something online with a man."
The author of this article suggests that the reason U.S. women are like this is because of notions of puritanical virtue. I think it has more to do with fear. There seems to be a general culture of fear in the U.S., specifically a fear of each other. Every man a woman sees on the street is a potential psycho. Every man or woman a parent sees is a potential child molester. The list goes on and on. I've noticed in particular that in L.A. when women are out and about, if they are alone, they are either talking on their smartphones, texting, reading - anything to be taken out of their present environment so they don't have to engage. It is very difficult to make any kind of connections with strangers these days.
